Erin K & Tash reside in London town but are not from there. Their songs are equal parts lovely melodies and tongue in cheek humour. They are up and comers in the local anti-folk scene (aside: I've always found the tag 'anti-folk' a bit misleading. When I think 'anti-folk' I think of heavy metal or rap.) and this up and comer status has been earned on the back of a lot of gigs and some undeniable charm. And possibly some horse heads. We asked some questions.

ERIN

Desert Island Top 5 albums (i.e. you can only have 5 albums to listen to and yes, there is a cd player and unlimited batteries on the island).

This is tough. I'm sure I'll change my mind tomorrow but if I were heading to this Island this morning I'd probably take
  • Rolling Stones: Beggars Banquet
  • The Velvet Underground and Nico (1967)
  • Whitey: The Light At The End of the Tunnel is a Train
  • Jolie Holland: Catalpa
  • Pixies: Doolittle
Your biggest musical inspirations (or things that inspire your writing). Most of my music is inspired by strange personal experiences. I rarely sugar coat. Reality can be pretty fantastic if you pay attention.

Is there a story behind the horse head? I bought my first horse head while renting flat on Brick Lane. I was studying at art school and had a number of people sleeping on my couch. I suppose the horse head was often used as an icebreaker in tense situations, hence the lyric: "we all would get along when we put the horse head on". Most of the horse head song lyrics are true, although I've not had sex while wearing the head (yet). I've also collected a number of strange photos sporting the horse head in different countries around the world. There is a page dedicated to these on our website. If you come to our live show you'll often see our drummer wearing the head during our set.

Favourite book or movie. I love all films by Wes Anderson. I don't know a great deal about film-making, but I really connect with his sense of composition and dry humour.

You can only have one thing for the rest of your life, which do you chose: cigarettes, coffee, wine, beer or ketchup? Red wine.

TASH

Desert Island Top 5 albums (i.e. you can only have 5 albums to listen to and yes, there is a cd player and unlimited batteries on the island).
  • Grace Slick and The Great Society - Conspicuous Only In Its Absence
  • Jefferson Airplane - Crown of Creation. Or Surrealistic Pillow!
  • Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left
  • Fiona Apple - When the pawn hits the conflicts he thinks like a king What he knows throws the blows when he goes to the fight And he'll win the whole thing 'fore he enters the ring There's no body to batter when your mind is your might So when you go solo, you hold your own hand And remember that depth is the greatest of heights And if you know where you stand, then you know where to land And if you fall it won't matter, cuz you'll know that you're right
  • And lastly, a CD of Mozart's Requiem Mass in D Minor for when I'm dying of starvation.
Your biggest musical inspirations (or things that inspire your writing). It was '98 era MTV like Metallica that got me wanting to play guitar but I was 10 and my dad said I shouldn't play or I'd get manly hands. (I finally learned guitar from Italian nuns when I was 14.) Then I discovered Fiona Apple about a year ago and it was her fault that I started singing. I liked how she wasn't afraid to sing about things that aren't considered very flattering for a woman. By the way, my hands aren't that manly. What inspires my writing now are just people I know, or very boring experiences like spiders in my flat or a new rug.

Favourite book or movie.  Alice in Wonderland has been my favourite book since I was 8. One pill makes you larger...

They say going to Japan is like going to the future. You recently had a song featured on a Japanese Google ad. I forgot where this question was going, but could you give an answer to the question that seemed to be developing? I can't but I would like to keep this question in because it mentions the Google ad.

You can only have one thing for the rest of your life, which do you chose: cigarettes, coffee, wine, beer or ketchup? Coffee!
