Emil Brynge's Maple Mountain comes from London. or maybe Sweden. or maybe both. i think i can hear the Englishness and the Scandanvianess in Emil's sounds, so I guess it makes sense that both places are named as a location on his myspace page. it never occurred to me to ask some questions that might clear this 'where you at?' confusion up, but it did occur to me to ask these:
Desert Island Top 5 albums (i.e. you can only have 5 albums to listen to and yes, there is a cd player and unlimited batteries on the island)
- Incredible String Band – Wee Tam
- Vetiver – Tight Knit
- Arvo Pärt – Arbos
- Ustad Amjad Ali Khan – Evening Ragas
- Jens Lekman – When I Said I Wanted To Be Your Dog
Which is more boring to watch on tv, cricket or baseball (we will except 'both are equally boring' as an answer)? Both are equally boring and equally confusing. Cricket is funnier because the English usually gets completely beaten up by their former colonies.
Your biggest musical inspirations (or things that inspire your writing). The forest, the far and middle east, fishing, friends and family.
What do you play and record with? I play on a brown Martin 000-15 and some bells round my foot. Sometimes I play the Sarod or the Oud. With me I have a drummer who plays on a snare and whatever junk we can find in the local area, and a keyboard player who sings lovely harmonies. I record in my studio, in my old family house, out on the fields of the south Swedish countryside.
Your favourite book or movie. Book: Jack Kerouac – On the road.
Tell us a something about yourself that might surprise us. When I was 15 I called myself a communist and I played golf. I used to play tournaments in a Che Guevara T-shirt.
Musicians that you think more people should know about.
- Emaline Delapaix – A Canadian Aussie from Germany that I met in England. She’s very talented.
- Lonely China Day – Like a Chinese Sigur Rós.
You can only have one thing for the rest of your life, which do you chose: cigarettes, coffee, wine, beer or ketchup? Tough one between coffee and beer, but I pick beer.
