a Singer of Songs comes bearing gifts. beautifully crafted songs recorded in his home studio. if you are not already familiar with lieven, you should become so. his myspace page is constantly being updated with new songs, accompanied with personal memories and carefully chosen words. we recently sat down with lieven (not literally) and asked him some hard hitting, very personal questions.

What would your Desert Island Top 5 albums be?
  • 'Either/Or/ - Elliott Smith (for cold nights, feeling lonely yet reassured)
  • 'Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot' - Sparklehorse (in the heat, looking for shelter in the shadow of a palm tree, staring at the heat waves far ahead)
  • 'Zuma' - Neil Young (for a happy day, hopes of seeing a boat sail by)
  • 'I see a darkness' - Bonnie 'Prince' Billie (the boat didn't come...)
  • 'Small change' - Tom Waits (... so I dig up a bottle and get really drunk)

What are you favourite albums of 2009?
  • 'Tiny Ruins' by Tiny Ruins
  • 'Welcome joy' by The Cave singers
  • 'Sometimes I wish we were an eagle' by Bill Callahan
  • 'Welcome to the welcome wagon' by The Welcome Wagon
  • 'North star deserters' by Vic Chesnutt
  • 'Hombre Lobo' by Eels
  • 'Shallow graves' by The tallest man on earth (though that may be a 2008 one)
Your biggest musical inspirations (or things that inspire your writing) Things that inspire me writing... playing my old spanish guitar, reading well-written words of others, listening to the sea, things that happen when i least expect them to happen and some people...

What do you play and record with? I play and record in my little home studio. seagull, fender and gretsch guitars. brandless spanish guitar. and some other cheap but emotionally expensive instruments.

Favourite books/movies
  • 'Smoke' by Wayne Wang
  • 'All the pretty horses' by Cormac McCarthy
  • 'For whom the bells tolls' by E. Hemingway
  • 'Apocalypse now' by F.F. Coppola
  • 'Grapes of wrath' by Steinbeck
  • 'Raging bull' by Scorsese
  • Complete works of Louis Paul Boon (Belgian writer)
  • 'The man who wasn't there' by Coen
What is one song (or name a few) that you never seem to get tired of, no matter how many times you listen to it?
'Angeles' by Elliott Smith
'Saint Mary' by Sparklehorse
'Independence day' by Vic Chesnutt
'Larry' by Buffalo Tom
'Instant Street' by dEUS
'Penny Lane' by The Beatles
(and thousands more... )

You can only have one thing for the rest of your life, which do you chose: cigarttes, coffee, wine, beer or ketchup? I'd rather not choose them but i guess i won't have much of a choice: cigarettes.

to get to know lieven even better than the highly scientific questionairre above, i highly recommend you seek him out on the interweb. he is a kind and wonderful person to get to know, even if just through his music.
