For those of you who don't feel like reading, i think this scene from High Fidelity sums things up:

after a long weekend out in the mountains and a few sneaky cigarettes, i had one of those 'aha' moments. over the years i had been accumulating different thoughts and interests and ideas in my head and then they all kind of aligned themselves in a way that i could see how they were all connected ...

Hi-Five for Lo-Fi Records wants to help make the world a better place. the music industry being in bad shape is not a reflection of the music being made or any generation's taste. the music industry being in bad shape is a reflection of the music industry. and 'music isn't what it used to be' is a bollocks thing to say because you can still listen to bob dylan or james brown; great music moves with the times. we can grow up with marvin gaye and wilco (and that is something marvin and wilco couldn't do -- except for i guess wilco). great music has always been getting made; there has always been great music. people just became more separated from the good stuff as the industry grew faster than the technology. it was buried under ground and you needed a map to find the map to where that new band you just heard of was playing a guerrilla show.

i grew up in a small town. the only radio stations available sucked (they still suck, but they used to really suck). would you like rap metal or contemporary country with that? it was up to you and your friends to bring bits of coolness back from different parts of the real world ('sublime' from your older brother, 'the band' from a friend). i've always felt the need to try and bring as much coolness back as i could fit in my pockets. because the more of it we brought back, the better things got. and when your pockets got too full sometimes you needed someone to help carry it. preferably not a hipster, as their pockets can't fit much in (don't get me wrong, what's in their pockets is usually good, but they are pretty tight pants and logistically there just isn't as much room in their pockets).

but now, it seems like the control over what music you have access to has being taken away. and i don't mean in the 'pirates' kind of way. i mean it like 'somebody left the cupboard open and look at all those cookies'. you can actually make proper music in your bedroom (i haven't quite mastered that) and release it a million different ways (you don't even have to release it, people can just listen to it). artists from different parts of the world can collaborate on a song without leaving their home town. blogs are months ahead of any magazine on what is happening and anyone can start one, even your mother (and you can even listen to the song while you read about it) and the list goes on and on and i'm sure someone has already written about it in greater detail. if music is a drug, then the middleman has decided to just focus on health care.

Hi-Five for Lo-Fi Records wants to help fight the good fight. listening to great music is the only self-help book you need. but its got to be that good stuff. none of that knock off shit. and we just want to play a role in helping people find the good stuff, however minor or major that role may be.

News: 'hey my' featured artist: Todd Snider

well, i am back from vacation now so i thought i would try to squeeze out a quick 'hey my' featured artist feature on the brilliant Todd Snider. he's just put out another great album called The Excitement Plan. it is another solid effort and worth the money. but if you really want to get your moneys worth, you should pick up East Nashville Skyline and Near Truths and Hotel Rooms. These are both two of my favorite albums of all time. Near Truths and Hotel Rooms is one of the best live cds ever, and the reason it is one of the best is because Todd Snider is one of the funniest / most charming performers around. I've listened to the 'The Story of The Ballad of The Devils Backbone Tavern' hundreds of times, and I every time I listen to it I sit there with stupid grin painted on my face the whole time. i've probably included on more mix cd's than any other song (well its actually two songs, but i've put together as one song for your listening pleasures).

and if you want a little more, here is a great video of Todd performing live in Des Moines. it is Todd at his funny / charming best:

but don't confuse him for a comedy act. He is one of the best songwriters around and has written gem after gem. I've read more than a few reviewers tag him as a 'honky tonk Randy Newman'. Randy Newman should be honoured for that comparison.

hello, i'm really busy at the moment, but before i go away for the month i figured i would put together and post a 'hey hey my my'space mix cd for september. i've decided to cut it down to 10 (used to be 12 for the counters out there). not because i can't find 12 songs worth pointing people to. it just helps spread things out a bit and maybe its more likely that people will check everyone out. also, i've been doing this for over a year now, so i figured i would learn from the tortoise and pace myself.

if i have time i will try and put together a feature on an artist or two from the list (well, a todd snider feature at the very least):

News: hey my featured artist - finbarr

what is a 'finbarr'? we had talked over email about a few things, but it occurred to me that i wasn't sure if finbarr was his name and forgot to ask. or if there was any hidden meaning but it? rather than find out, i thought i would try and figure it out. my first assumption was that it was a last name. like 'daughtry' but less shiny. after some googling and seeing that there were a few people of different levels of fame with the first name finbarr, i thought it was probably his first name or probably based on someone who is named finbarr. or maybe it was like 'bon iver'; a mystical name that is a band. i remember being convinced that bon iver was some guy from the forests of norway. so, rather than submit to lazy writing and just ask finbarr if his name was finbarr, i decided to focus on the important questions that were already asked:

here is his top 5 list of 'the best australian bands that people outside of australia have probably never heard of' (bonus points awarded as i can say i've never heard of any and i live outside of australia)

finbarr was kind enough to provide explanation and insight into his picks, completely unprovoked: "Grand Salvo and The Middle East are kind of debatable as to whether they are known outside of Australia or not. Grand Salvo (or Paddy Mann, the man behind it all) is doing quite well but i think very unknown and completely underrated, it is easily ( and i say with confidence ) my biggest influence. The Middle East are actually a band full of all my closest friends and old house mates who are on their way to being something quite big, they have only really just begun to start looking outside Australia. The man behind Dragging Pianos was another housemate of mine that lived in the very same house, i think that Sam writes better songs than allot of my favorite bands, he is easily a huge influence and is touring with The Middle East in the next few upcoming months. The Forest was a hardcore band that has now ended and rankly...they were simply just awesome. hahahaha ahh The Marf...where do i even begin. The Marf is Nathan Roche, it is the result of, one chord songs, binge drinking, chain smoking, living in poverty, hopelessness, mumbling and a head full of way too many ideas. i actually played bass for one of Nathans albums, he has now moved to Sydney and has already recorded another album (his third in 2 years...keeping in mind they are all at least 10 tracks long) and is now working on a new record, he has also released a book of short stories and is planning on writing more. i think all up he has had 4 releases (he'll tell you that theres only two as he has completely banished the cassette tape and the first album) before he left this man was probably the only thing running our underground scene in town, art shows, gigs, he even had his own monthly(debatable) magazine full of interviews, his own art, album reviews and poems. in short, Nathan writes some songs that absolute ooze with pop only to be smeared around by the lo-fi recordings, odd instruments and poetic lyrics, i don't think i've ever met a more productive or artist man."

i don't remember how our paths crossed, but at first listen i was fan of finbarr's music. at first, i was originally drawn to 'kaleidoscope'. the first few seconds of the verse i thought that it sounded a bit like bright eyes' 'lua' but as the song evolved into something quite its own, i was impressed with its loveliness. after further listens to his myspace player, i think 'little brother' has been that all important 'grower' song for me. that one that you first overlook in favor of another and then realize what a gem it is. finbarr is working on an album, but a release date is still a bit in the fog, as inspiration is fueling a bit of a creative streak. which is always important to grab hold onto when it hits. "i originally wanted it to be an EP but im up to about 6 tracks now. Every time i finish recording a song, another seems to jump in my head, im guessing i'll just keep recording until i don't have anything left in me and then choose whats actually worth releasing".

his sound is very much of the 'lo-fi' variety, but not in the way that the lovely melodies and lyrics are covered in fuzz, or is so bad that its good. its just good. he uses a variety of different recording devices and techniques, including a "cassette tape recorder and a microphone (he) found on this old house boat that (he) used to live on"; several different instruments, random sounds and layers to create really great atmospheric bedroom music. "in nearly all the tracks you can hear birds in the background (they never shut up) in one track you can even hear my mother talking in the room next door, but i feel like that just adds that personal touch, it takes the listener to your room, gives them a short insight on your life and how you live it.". "my writing process is...well i guess i don't really have one, it's funny but i usually find myself staring into the microphone yet again with no idea what's about to take place. i'll come up with a riff, or something compeletly skeletal, like half a chord progression, usually with no words, or any idea how its going to start or end. and then as soon as i press record its like i kinda just know what to do, as soon as i get that first track down i immediately know what i want in the song, what instruments etc. i find i write the best lyrics when i am put on the spot like that as well."

finbarr just turned 19. he is from australia. if you put a gun to his head and made him pick only one song that he could have to listen to for the rest of his existence, he "could live with nothing more than Needles by Grand Salvo" (and yes, it is important to consider being in this position yourself). in a brief sidebar about accents that sound good on girls, he confided that "if there was one accent that was going to do it for me, itd probably be the french". new zealand a close second?.

Hi-Five for Lo-Fi is available for free download (take that global recession!). this is a slightly different version than what was released before (in fact there were two albums released before). News: 'hey my' featured artist: The Avett Brothers

this is the first foray into expanding the 'hey hey my my'space blog into something a bit more to dig into. usually, the lists have featured artists allot less known then 'the avett brothers' but i'm sure there are a few unlucky people out there unaware of this gem of a band. at the moment at least, and for the past couple months, these guys have been my favourite band around. the thing that pushed them right to the top, after being somewhere in the middle grounds of my listening time, was this:

they've got a new album coming out near the end of September. i can't see it not being one of the (my) top 10 of the year. top 1? not sure. i might have just been listening to Distraction #74 too much. if you don't own all their albums, you probably should. or at least Emotionalism and 4 Thieves Gone. and if your lucky enough to be in one of the cities on their current tour, get a ticket.

if you got some time, why not check some of it? also, just want to mention that in the feature on DULAHIBCS the 'fingers do the talking with some solid guitar work' is actually about Pieter the Rooster, who did all the finger talking on that. when my fingers do the talking they are usually saying something rude.
